Anyone who has ever felt broken or lost with no one to care and no place to turn can identify with the needs of homeless teens. They suffer from the shame and stigma of having to live their lives on the streets. Help Homeless Teens under Ruth's House Incorporated is a nonprofit 501c3 charity established for nine years to help, support and encourage teens who live on the street. Many are overlooked because society either choose to ignore or does not recognize their problems. These are troubled teens and they suffer with emotional illnesses. Those in authority have difficulty recognizing their symptoms and don't always understand their specific needs. However care and attention is just as critical for the individual who is suffering from an emotional lack as it is for those who suffer with physical health issues. Our goal is to keep the teens clean and healthy with a hope for the future.
Homeless teens are vulnerable. They resort to survival behavior. It is unconscionable to think that they can live on the street and not become affected and infected by their environment. They get lured and coerced into human sex trafficking. The average age of girls entering prostitution is thirteen and the age is decreasing at an alarming rate. Teens who live on the street are at a higher risk for mental health disabilities, physical abuse, sexual exploitation, substance abuse and death. Help Homeless Teens advocates for teens who have gone through a series of events and losses that caused them to end up in absolute despair and desperation. They suffer with low self-esteem, depression, ADHD, schizophrenia and other behavior disorders. They have strained relationships. Some have escaped the most horrific of circumstances. They are on the street due to no fault of their own. Many are on the street as a result of their parents engaging in inappropriate behaviors such as substance abuse or addiction that has negative consequences on the teen. The economy has impacted the ability of some parents to care for their teens. Others are simply not able to sustain due to vast array of circumstances. Many runaways have been physically and emotionally abused or bullied both in and out of the home. One prominent statistic in regards to throwaways is that they are often rejected as a result of their homosexuality.
